Today there are many web sites offering cheap online cremations and funerals.
Why bother?? Why not just let the county do the dirty work if folks care so little? Are some people just too busy to give someone a decent service? Or too cheap?? I have been doing this for years and I know how much work is involved in a simple cremation, so when I see a ad for a $750 cremation, I figgure something is wrong. Are they cremating 2 or 3 bodies at once? How do you even know you’re getting the right cremains back? I remember a couple of years back a story about a guy in Georgia throwing bodies in the woods and giving back boxes of dirt to families. I saw a web site today where you don’t even see a live person face to face. You just pay online and they mail you SOME cremains. How can you possiably trust this person to handle your loved one or much less be a funeral director and not some weirdo in his garage somewhere, maybe in a internet cafe in Samolia, with just a computer and a paypal account.asking for your credit card info. You don’t have a clue where your loved one is. Or, they could be selling the organs to someone in another country and cremating the rest and making thousands off of your cheap way out. You know, a good kidney today can bring a pretty high price. No questions asked.
The same thing goes for some of these closed casket cheapie services. how can you possiably know what’s happening when all you deal with is someone on the the other end of a computer and then just show up at the burial plot and just trust some stranger that it’s your Mom in that casket and she hasn’t been mulated for a kidney or such? I know this all sounds a little extreame but you should really think before you do something like this. There are so many scams and things people wouldn’t normally do if the economy was not so bad. Watch the news and see all the weirdness going on that folks fall for.
I wish someone would call me and let me know how this works. I’m just a old school person. (No funeral directors, please) I just don’t think I could even do my dog like that.
Show a little class. You might as well give them to a guy in a van behind the 7-11.

!. Having used them in my funeral home I quickly discovered how inferior they are.(SEE OTHER POST) My wife would NEVER be caught dead with a knock-off purse or shoes, wallet, Rolox watch or anything else. She felt it would be the supreme insult to the deceased and the family to use a knock-off casket. Let alone, take it to a church or have a service where others could see it. There are plenty of good American made caskets for the same price that you can use proudly. This leads me to…………………
2. With the economy the way it is, why put American workers out of a job and send your dollars overseas? We’re trying to surive here in the USA. You can be cheap and still support the home team. Call me if you need help.

At a recent trade show the buzz was that everyone had agreed to raise cremation prices. Folks can’t afford the high burial prices, so cremations are on the rise. Expect to pay about triple for a cremation in the future. since a large number of funeral homes are owned by the same corperation, prices will be the same anywhere you go. This is illegal, called price fixing, But, who cares? The FTC doesn’t.

Another thing I noticed was the number of weirdos no in the business. I would feel really scared to trust my family member to any of them, especally in the prep room. Sexual acts don’t belong in the preproom. That’s all I’m saying. I’ll have a lot of retallation on that one. It’s don’t ask, don’t tell in this business. These corp. will hire anyone as long as they are cheap, they just keep them in the back room.

Sooooo…. think about this. You’re making payments on a $10-20 k funeral and you have paid in $5k and you loose your job and miss a payment. Guess what, you loose your money… you got nothing. OR, you decide maybe you wife and kids could use the money just to eat after you’re gone, or just pay bills. You decide that cremation may be the way to go. Try asking for a refund and see what you get, HA!
Chances of that pre-need still being there when you need it are also pretty slim as well. WHAT THEY HAVEN’T ALREADY SPENT GOES IN THE STOCK MARKET. Also, it’s like aponzie scheme. They keep some to pay for immeadiate need and spend the rest.
Don’t be stupid, do research. Search “funeral timeline” or “SCI” and see what you find. Google.

As the economy continues to falter, many folks are pushed into decisions they are not really comfortable with as far as funeral arrangements. Many are forced to choose cremation when tradition has always been burial. I think the most important part of a funeral is the coming together of the family and friends for the service. all religions usually observe some type of service. To a lot of folks, a direct cremation is not exactly fulfilling in the process of respect of their loved one’s passing or life’s memory.
I’ve tried to come up with a couple of alteratives that might help.

!. A complete service w/casket that results in either a burial or cremation. Your choice.
We pick up, bathe, embaulm, dress, make-up, hair, casket, viewing (our chapel), service, redgister book, Thank you cards for flowers. Includes a casket for either burial or cremation.
Aftrerwards, either delivery to cemetery or crematory. Either place for $2500. (If burial, you must have space, pay open and closing, and concrete liner if required.) Price includes cremation.

OR if you just perfer a cremation only, that’s just $950.

I am amazed at what some funeral homes tell families at time of death. I don’t know how some of them can sink so low. There is definatly no ethics in the funeral business, at least in Texas.
Yesterday, a family I have done business with several times in the past came in and picked out a brand name, high end casket to be used at the VA cem. here in Dallas. It was a very high quality, brushed silver casket with light grey velver. We delivered it to Arlington Funeral Home, here in Arlington, Tx. They are part of the Greenwood Funeral Home in Ft. Worth. The Funeral Dir. there was a real jerk. He told us that there was NEW LAWS about caskets. That they must know the Mfg. and the exact dimentions, type of steel and gauge. They had to meet certain requirments to be used at the National Cem. or any other cem. That it was a new law. I understand the need to be carefull after my last experince with a import casket, but that was the families choice, not mine to make. I just provide a service.
Now, I own 2 funeral homes and I have never heard of such a law, much less a new one. I called the Texas Funeral Service Comm. and they also never heard of such either. I have never had a problem with Greenwood FH, but Arlington FH has some real jerks working there that have no reguard for funeral laws and ethics. They will tell families any lie or deceive them in any way they can to reach their goals. I feel sorry for anyone who thies to rely on them or their honesty. There are to many other choices.
I try to tell folks to check with the BBB before making a choice. They are right 50% of the time.

EVERYTHING WE SELL MEETS OR EXCEEDS ALL CASKET REQUIREMENTS OF ANY CEMETERY OR FUNERAL HOME REQUIREMENT. WE BUY OURS WHERE THEY GET THEIRS.

This last week we performed a funeral service for a nice family here in Ft. Worth. Because of a need to save all they could, they had gone to Dallas and purchased a Chinease casket at a warehouse that imports them. I had no objection because we sell caskets as well, and you have the right to purchase anywhere you want. They brought over a nice looking wood that was supposed to be popular. The body was about 200 lbs. He fit fine. I didn’t look very hard at the casket, we just did what the family asked. That’s our job.
When we arrived at the cemetery there was a lot of friends and family there. The pall bearers took the casket from the hearse and headed to the grave. Suddenly the whole side of the casket broke off, causing the casket to fall to one side and the body fall out the side of the casket on the ground. This was a horriable situation for the family and friends to witness. We managed to get the person buried, but it was not a good thing. their attempt to save a couple of bucks on a imported casket was a mistake.
The top of the casket was indeed popular wood, but the sides and bottom were a cheap particle board made to look like real wood. They really got screwed. So much for internet caskets.
I try to sell a good quality American casket for a cheap price. They may cost a little more than Chinease but you get the quality you want that woun’t fall apart in front of the family. I don’t mind working with a family to try to find something that fits their budget. It’s my reputation on the line as well. I don’t mind working with families to provide a good service, but they need to just talk to me about it and not fall for a sales pitch.
If you read glowing reviews of the casket web sites how great they are, It’s more than a good chance it was written by the owner of the web site. Check out the Yahoo web review of Best Price Casket in Houston.

A woman called me today and asked me to post this on my webpage. She said that before her father died she called around to several places to get prices since they had limited funds. Our price was the lowest she found. But before she could even think about it, Lakeview Funeral Home,A new black funeral home, was calling her back with promises to beat our prices. She said she would have to speak with other family members and call her back and hung up. 5 minutes later the phone rang again with more promises. the lady called her back at least 5 times. They finally let the funeral home pick up her dad. The funeral home then said they were sending a limo to pick up the family. After arriving at the funeral home they were put in a room and a sales pitch started. That cheap price they were told went out the window. It was plus this and plus that and “of course you want” all kind of things that ran the bill up to almost 3 times what they wanted. BUT they couldn’t get up and leave because they didn’t come in their car. They were stuck there for over 5 hours before someone would take them home.
Bottom line was they were expecting something a lot different than what they got. A big place has a big overhead and when they only do 3-4 services a month you get to pay the bills.
